The Heads of State of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa will meet next August for the 15th edition of the BRICS summit.
This meeting, which will be held in South Africa, specifically in Gauteng, Johannesburg, and under its presidency, will have the motto "BRICS and Africa: partnership for mutually accelerated growth, sustainable development and inclusive multilateralism"[1] (BRICS, 2023), and will aim at several topics, among which stand out: cooperation between countries for development, unlocking and harnessing the opportunities presented by the African continent's trade through its "African continental free trade area"[2] (BRICS, 2023), as well as strengthening multilateralism through "equity and inclusiveness."[3] (BRICS, 2023)
Currently, the BRICS countries together, contribute "31.5% of GDP in the world."[4] (Devonshire-Ellis, Ch., 2023) Coupled with the above, GDP projections for 2030 point to an increase of "50% of world GDP"[5] (Devonshire-Ellis, Ch., 2023) from the BRICS.
This forum has a diversity of countries and economies that allowed the creation, in 2015, of the "New Development Bank"[6] (NDB, 2023), whose goal is to help the economy and trade of developing countries.
This bank is currently integrated by the 5 founding members, plus the new members which are: "Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates, which joined in 2021, as well as Egypt, which recently joined in 2023."[7] (NBD, 2023).
Now, "Uruguay is a potential member"[8] (NBD, 2023) to be part of this bank, and last June 10, Honduras formally requested "to join the New BRICS Development Bank."[9] (Elpaís.cr, 2023)
Finally, it is important to note that the BRICS cooperation guide is proposed from the point of view of the 2030 Agenda, inclusion and meeting the needs of the countries of the South. In addition, sustainability and care for the environment is a fundamental commitment of the BRICS in favor of preserving the planet for present and future generations of the South and the world.
