Towards a multilateral world

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

On 13 and 14 January 2023, the "Think20 Inception Conference" was held in New Delhi as part of the G20 International Forum, with the aim of proposing new reforms to the current multilateral system, including less geopolitical friction, less fragmentation between nations, less conflict, more trust and understanding between countries.

Now more than ever it is necessary for international organisations and institutions to be more effective, active, structured and function logically in order to face, together with nations, global challenges such as climate change, food security, energy security, the high cost of living crisis, the health crisis, and the ever-changing geopolitical environment in a world of divergent powers.

It is important to note that one of the most important proposals of this forum was for greater transparency in the decision-making process during the G20 negotiations, continuity of previous G20 work, as well as accessibility to negotiations and overall representation.

In addition, new initiatives were proposed for the UN Security Council, such as inviting new permanent members to join the Council, including India, Brazil and some African countries, in order to seek a representative balance of continents, as well as the creation of the right of value as opposed to the right of veto.

In short, India's presidency of the G20 has much to contribute, especially on issues of multilateralism, in its consolidation in the face of an increasingly multipolar world.
